Released in April 2013, the Galaxy S4 is the predecessor of Samsung’s current flagship, the Galaxy S5.The device was originally launched with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and it now supports Android 4.4.2 KitKat. While Samsung hasn’t officially announced any Android Lollipop roll out date for the device, recent rumorsindicate that the Galaxy S4 will be one of Samsung handsets to receive it in early 2015.
But if you don’t like waiting or uncertainty you can flash an unofficial Lollipop ROM on your Galaxy S4 now. AntaresOne, a developer and XDA Senior Member, has been constantly updating a CyanogenMod 12 (CM12) build of Android Lollipop. He posted a way on how to flash it on the said device in this forum thread. You can head to the thread now for the instructions or you can follow our outlined guide below.
Please take note of the following before updating
- Since this method utilizes an unofficial CyanogenMod build and involves an installation process that does not come from nor endorsed by Samsung or Google, the outcome may not be as you expected and the method may even brick your device. If you proceed, that means you understand the risks and will not hold The Bitbag accountable for anything that goes wrong. This will also invalidate your device’s warranty.
- The CM12 build used in this method only supports the Galaxy S4 variants powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets
- As this method requires flashing a custom ROM, you need to install a custom recovery mode on your Galaxy S4 first. You can use TWRP recovery for this.
- Make sure that the device is at least 50% charged and that you backup important data.
- You can use TWRP to backup your current ROM. Do it by turning off your phone and putting it on recovery mode by pressing and holding the following buttons together: Volume Up, Home, and Power button. After that, select “Swipe to Back Up” on the bottom of the screen.
Steps on how to install Android 5.0 on Galaxy S4 using CyanogenMod 12
- Download the following files. Do not unzip the files, just save them on your Galaxy S4’s SD card and remember the folder where you saved them.
- Boot your handset in TWRP recovery mode and perform a factory reset by choosing Wipe > Advanced Wipe > then select System and Wipe
- Once done, go back to the main menu and choose “Install zip from SD card”
- Find the folder where you saved the files earlier, select the CM12 zip file and flash it by tapping on “Swipe to Confirm Flash” then wait until the process is complete
- After that, do the previous step to the other two files
- After flashing all the files, you may now return to the main menu then choose Reboot and tap on System.
