Samsung’s latest phablet model, the Galaxy Note 4, has yet to reach all intended markets but it’s now possible to root the device for those who already have it. Renowned Android custom ROM developerChainfire has come up with a way to do it using his popular CF-Auto-Root method.
The developer posted the guide in this XDA forum threadand we’ve tried to outline the steps below. Take note that Chainfire’s root packages only apply to certain Galaxy Note 4 models which are listed below. Confirm that you have the right model by heading to Settings > About Phone > Model Number.
Important reminders before rooting
- Since this method allows you to gain root access on your device, a process that is neither supported nor endorsed by Samsung or Google, proceeding means that you understand the risks and will not hold The Bitbag accountable for anything that goes wrong. Moreover, rooting will invalidate your device’s warranty.
- Make sure that your Note 4 is at least 50% charged and that you backup important data; a Windows computer is needed for this method
- Enable USB Debugging Mode on your device. Do it by navigating to Settings > About phone > then tap Build number seven times. This prompt will appear: “You are now a developer.” Return to the Developer options and select USB debugging.
Steps on how to root the Galaxy Note 4
- Download the right CF-Auto-Root package for your model. Extract the “.zip” file, which should leave you with a “.tar.md5” file. Here are the links:
- SM-N9100 (China, Qualcomm)
- SM-N9106W (China, Qualcomm)
- SM-N9108V (China, Qualcomm)
- SM-N9109W (China, Qualcomm)
- Install Odin V3.09 on your computer.
- Turn off your Galaxy Note then turn it on and put it in Download Mode. Do it by pressing and holding the following buttons simultaneously: Volume Down + Home + Power. If a warning screen is displayed, press the Volume Up button to enter Download mode.
- Run the Odin program on your computer and connect your Note 4 using a USB cable. You should run it as an Administrator (right click on the “.exe” file). If the ID: COM box in Odin turns light blue with COM port number, that mean the phone is connected successfully.
- In Odin, click the AP button then select the CF-Auto-Root file you extracted earlier.
- Make sure that the Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options are checked; the Re-partition option must be left unchecked.
- Finally, click on the Start button to start flashing the root package. Your Galaxy Note 4 will begin to reboot after that.
