Owners of Samsung’s 2012 flagship, the Galaxy S3, might not see an official Android 5.0 Lollipop roll out soon (or maybe never) but that hasn’t stopped third party developers from doing what they do best. A crafty folk from the XDA forums devised a custom ROM that will allow the S3 to run the latest Android OS.
A senior XDA developer comes up with a way to update the Galaxy S3 to Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Before you update, keep these in mind
Senior XDA member called arter97 managed to update the almost three year-old Galaxy S3 to Android Lollipop by porting an Android 5.0 AOSP ROM to the Exynos chipset-powered variant of the device with model number GT-I9300. This side-loaded firmware upgrade intends to improve the device’s battery life, speed up the booting process, and enhance the graphics among others.
However, since this method requires the installation of a third-party ROM, some bugs and instability issues can be expected. The developer mentioned that some areas that are still having issues with this early release include the camera, internal & external storage, and transmission features like Wi-Fi & GPS.
As mentioned, this method is developed by a third-party source and is therefore not endorsed by Google or Samsung. If you proceed, you’re doing it at your own risk. It’s possible that arter97 or other developers release another forked version that includes improvements to the said issues. But if you’re not willing to wait, you can check out arter97’s instructions on his XDA forum post. We also provided an itemized, step-by-step guide below if that’s your thing.
How to update Samsung Galaxy S3 to Android 5.0 Lollipop
- Before starting the installation process, make sure that your Galaxy S3 fits the description by heading to Settings > About Phone > Model Number and check if it’s indeed the GT-I9300 model. Important data should also be backed up and the device’s battery must be at least 50% charged.
- It’s a prerequisite that the S3 is rooted, has the bootloader unlocked, and installed with the PhilZ Touch Recovery.
- Next, download arter97’s kernel file and the Android Lollipop Galaxy S3 firmware. Extract the ZIP file and save the contents to this location on your Galaxy S3: /sdcard/clockwordmod/backup.
- After that, put the device on recovery mode by turning it off and on again while pressing and holding the following buttons together: Volume Up, Home, and Power button.
- Perform a factory reset by choosing the “wipe data/factory reset” option. You can scroll up and down the menu using the volume buttons then use the power button to select. You should also do a cache data wipe by selecting the “wipe cache partition” option. Right after that, go the Advanced menu and choose “wipe dalvik cache.”
- Now, you can restore the date that you’ve backed up beforehand. Doing this will actually install the Android 5.0 ROM on your device as you already saved it in the backup folder.
- The next step is to install the arter97 kernel since the custom ROM will not boot without it. Select the kernel file you saved on the SD card folder then flash it. Upon installing, do not reboot you Galaxy S3; you need to be in recovery mode until the process is complete
- Once the installation process is done, just reboot you Galaxy S3 and that’s it.
