At present, an official Android 5.0 Lollipop announcement for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is all but confirmed. Now that there are solid rumors about the new OS’ arrival on the Note 3, fans of the Galaxy Note 2 are wondering when the elusive Lollipop update will come to their beloved phablet.
A Senior XDA member posted instructions on how to get Android Lollipop running on your Galaxy Note 2
Even though Note 2’s quad-core Exynos 4412 chipset, 8-megapixel main camera, and 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display can still keep up with most of today’s user demands, Samsung may not plan on pushing the Android 5.0 update to the almost three year-old device at all. Their current phablet flagship, the Galaxy Note 4, is still on Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
Thankfully, you may not need to wait for Android L’s uncertain landing on your device. If you have a Galaxy Note 2, with model number GT-N7100 to be specific, you can follow the instructions posted by ikaster17, a senior XDA member, on one of the site’s developer forum threads. Meanwhile, a Youtube user had apparently followed those steps and posted a footage on how he did it. In the video, the OS appears to be running smoothly on his Note 2. You can either follow the instructions directly from the developer’s post or you may want to check our step-by-step rendition below.
Before you begin, keep these in mind
Here’s the obvious disclaimer: Since this method does not come from or endorsed by Samsung or Google, there’s no guarantee that it will work effectively or as you expected. There is even a chance that you may brick your device. So if you proceed, you’re doing this at your own risk.
The usual reminder when updating any device is to backup all important data so it’s better that you do that first. Make sure that your Note 2 is at least 50% charged and that your device is indeed the GT-N7100 model. You can confirm that by heading to Settings > About Phone > Model Number. Ensure that your device is running the stock Android 4.4.2 KitKat and that the TWRP Recovery mode is installed beforehand.
Steps on how to install Android 5.0 Lollipop on the Galaxy Note 2
- Download the ROM, GApps, and SuperSU root file. Links to those files are listed in this XDA forum thread
- Copy those files on the SD card of your Note 2
- Turn off your device and put it on recovery mode by pressing and holding the following buttons together: Volume Up, Home, and Power button
- Perform a factory reset wipe by tapping on the “Wipe” button
- Select the Install button on the recovery mode menu, look for the SD card folder where you saved the files you downloaded previously
- Tap on the Android 5.0 for GT-N7100 ROM to flash it
- When complete, select the on-screen Home option then tap on Install again then do the same for the GApps file and the SuperSU file (if you want to have root access)
- After that, tap on “Reboot System” to restart the Note 2 and that’s it
