Sony has just uploaded a video in its official Youtube developer channel and published a post on its developer blog demonstrating how to unlock the bootloader option of various Xperia smartphones and tablets.
When you unlock the bootloader of a device, what will it do?
Unlocking the bootloader will enable you install any custom ROM on your mobile device. That means if you’re phone runs an older Android OS, you may now install a modified version of any operating system made by third party developers.
What it means for Sony
The bootloader program is one of the main reasons why Android is a haven for customization geeks. It enables users to personalize their devices to their needs. Perhaps that the reason why Sony is becoming more developer-friendly recently. The company even made an unlocked version of its latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z3, right from their website.
What are the risks of performing this process?
This method will void the warranty of Xperia devices, depending on the carrier or retailer from which you got them. Sony also mentioned a number possible risks in their blog post including some feature malfunctions, bugs, and device overheating. All of those apparently stems from the fact that custom ROMs installed on devices are built by third party developers who may or may not have substantial training or experience in software development.
