Released in November 2012, the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is the compact version of the South Korean tech giant’s flagship handset of that year. The latest supported firmware for the device is Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It seems that Samsung won’t be updating it to Android 4.4 KitKat anytime soon, let alone an Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade.
Android Lollipop installation guide for the Galaxy S3 Mini with model number I8190
Thankfully, talented custom ROM developers from NovaFusion have come up with a way to install the unofficial but working version of Android 5.0 on the S3 Mini. This has been brought to our attention via a thread posted by New Maclaw, a senior XDA member. You can check out various ROMs for the S3 Mini and other devices in theNovaFusion site. This time, we’ll focus on how to install the custom AOSP Android 5.0 ROM they provided for the Galaxy S3 Mini.
Important reminders before updating
This method uses a custom, third-party ROM that does not come from or endorsed by Samsung or Google. There’s a chance that it will not work as expected or it may even brick your handset. So if you proceed, you’re doing this at your own risk.
Having said that, this AOSP Android 5.0 ROM is not a daily driver either. The developers listed the following features which you can expects issues with once the ROM is installed. If the S3 Mini you have on hand is a spare device and you really want to test how Android Lollipop fares, perhaps you can live with these issues.
- RIL (phone/SMS/3G)
- Audio (both speakers/headphones/microphone)
- GPS/Glonass
- This release doesn’t support f2fs yet, only ext4 filesystem
- Camera missing part of OMXes implementation (so there’s no fully HW video acceleration)
Furthermore, this method only applies to Galaxy S3 Mini devices with model number I8190. Confirm that yours is compatible by going to Settings > About Phone > Model Number. Make sure that it also also rooted and installed with the CWM Recovery Mode and that the bootloader is unlocked.
Before proceeding with the steps below, backup all of you data using CWM by rebooting your device in Recovery Mode then choose “Backup and Restore” then select “Backup.” You S3 Mini should also be at least 50% charged.
