Samsung’s 2014 flagship, the Galaxy S5, currently supports Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS. Though the South Korean tech giant hasn’t officially announced a roll out date, there are lots of rumors about Android 5.0 Lollipop hitting the flagship model on December.
If you’re looking to gain root access on your Android KitKat-run Galaxy S5, Chainfire, an XDA Recognized Developer and Senior Moderator has made that possible. His rooting method is one of the most widely adopted and sticks closely to the stock Android firmware. He posted a thread on the XDA forum showing us how to do it. We’ve tried to outline the procedures below.

Before rooting, keep these in mind

  • Since this method allows you to gain root access on your device, a process that is neither supported nor endorsed by Samsung or Google, proceeding means that you understand the risks and will not hold The Bitbag accountable for anything that goes wrong. Moreover, rooting will invalidate your device’s warranty.
  • Ensure that the Galaxy S5 is at least 50% charged and that you backup important data; you will also need a Windows computer for this method
  • Enable USB debugging on your handset; navigate toSettings > About Phone > tap on the Build Number seven times then return to Settings > Development Settings > check the USB debugging option

Steps on how to root the Galaxy S5

  • Download the right CF-Auto-Root package for your model. Extract the “.zip” file, which should leave you with a “.tar.md5” file. Here are the links:
  • Install Odin V3.09 on your computer.
  • Turn off your Galaxy S5 and put it in Download Mode by pressing and holding the following buttons simultaneously: Volume Down + Home + Power. If a warning screen is displayed, press the Volume Up button to enter Download mode.
  • Run the Odin program on your computer and connect your Galaxy S5 using a USB cable. You should run it as an Administrator (right click on the “.exe” file)
  • In Odin, click on the AP button then select the CF-Auto-Root file you extracted earlier.
  • Ensure that the F. Reset Time and the Auto Reboot options are checked; Re-partition must be left unchecked
  • Click on the Start button to start flashing the root package. Your Galaxy S5 will begin to reboot after that.
